Monroe County has Florida's highest average homeowners premium, $7,863 as of March 31, 2026, and Sumter has the lowest, $2,105. These are Florida Office of Insurance Regulation averages for traditional homeowners policies including wind coverage. Palm Beach is second at $6,323.

Key Findings

  • The ten highest premiums are all in counties with a coastline. They run from $7,863 in Monroe to $4,063 in Pinellas.
  • In 63 of 67 counties the average premium is higher than the median real estate taxes paid. The exceptions are Alachua, Flagler, St. Johns and Sumter. The premium is a 2026 average and the taxes are a 2020-2024 Census median, so this compares two different measures.
  • Against home value, the order changes, and no county is in both top 10s. Most of the ten highest shares are in inland counties. Each has a median home value of $153,600 or less, against $359,000 statewide in the same Census 5-year data, and average premiums from $2,698 to $3,477. Read the caveats directly above the second table.
  • Monroe ranks first on price and 42nd on share. Its median home value, $780,600, is the highest in the state.

* Baker and Union: OIR prints an average excluding wind above the average including wind ($2,913 against $2,346; $3,475 against $2,667), the reverse of the other 65 counties. We checked both rows against the published PDF and they are shown as printed. The two averages cover different groups of policies, and OIR does not explain the reversal, so read these two counties with care.

Where is the premium largest against home value?

Read this before using the table. The share is not what a homeowner pays. It divides one county's average premium by its median home value, so it describes the county, not any one household's policy.

The two figures measure different homes. OIR's figure is a mean across traditional homeowners policies with wind coverage. The Census figure is a median across owner-occupied homes, including mobile homes, which can lower the median in some counties and raise the share.

* See the note under the premium table.

Ranks use unrounded shares. Counties that show the same rounded share, such as Taylor and Madison at 2.35%, are separated by less than a hundredth of a point, so treat them as level. Flagler, Leon and Sumter are in the bottom 10 on both measures.

How to read these numbers

  • The dates differ. The premium is from March 2026 and the home value is a 2020-2024 estimate. Where values have since risen, the share is overstated.
  • Small counties are less certain. Census estimates have sampling error, which is larger in small counties, and small gaps in rank there may mean nothing.
  • Your premium will differ. OIR notes that actual premium varies with company, insured value, deductibles and policy terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Florida county has the highest average homeowners premium?

Monroe County, at $7,863 as of March 31, 2026, followed by Palm Beach at $6,323 and Broward at $6,136. These are Florida Office of Insurance Regulation averages for traditional homeowners policies including wind coverage.

Which Florida county has the lowest average homeowners premium?

Sumter County, at $2,105 as of March 31, 2026, followed by Marion at $2,191 and Wakulla at $2,292.

Is home insurance higher than property tax in Florida counties?

In 63 of 67 counties the average premium is higher than the median real estate taxes paid. The exceptions are Alachua, Flagler, St. Johns and Sumter. The premium is a 2026 average and the taxes are a 2020-2024 Census median, so this compares two different measures.

Which Florida county has the highest premium compared with home value?

Holmes County, where the average premium of $2,942 equals 2.67% of the $110,200 median home value. The share describes the county, not any one household's policy, and the Census median includes mobile homes, which can lower the median and raise the share.

Why are the Baker and Union county figures footnoted?

OIR prints an average excluding wind above the average including wind in these two counties ($2,913 against $2,346 in Baker, $3,475 against $2,667 in Union), the reverse of the other 65. They are shown as printed; OIR does not explain the reversal.

Method

We took each county's average homeowners premium including wind from Table "Average Premiums Charged for Homeowners and Condominium Unit Owners" in the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation's Property Insurance Stability Report of July 1, 2026 (data as of March 31, 2026; OIR divides total premium by policies in force), and each county's median owner-occupied home value and median real estate taxes paid from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates, tables B25077 and B25103. We ranked all 67 counties by premium, then by premium divided by median home value, using unrounded values. The share is our arithmetic on those two published figures: we added no estimate or model of our own, and a mean premium from 2026 is set against a median value from 2020-2024. The Baker and Union rows were checked against the PDF and are shown as printed, with a footnote.

Premium: Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Property Insurance Stability Report, July 1, 2026, data as of March 31, 2026. Home value and real estate taxes: U.S. Census Bureau ACS 2020-2024 5-year, B25077 and B25103. Share: our arithmetic.
