A concentrated market
The ten largest car insurance writers account for roughly three quarters of all U.S. private passenger auto premiums. These are the companies behind almost every quote, ad, and agent you will meet.
The big four
State Farm leads with eighteen point three percent of the market. Progressive holds fifteen point two. GEICO's parent Berkshire Hathaway writes twelve point three, and Allstate ten point four, per N A I C data.
Who else makes the list
U S A A is fifth at six point two percent, but only serves military members, veterans, and their families. Liberty Mutual and Farmers each write about four percent, with American Family, Travelers, and Nationwide rounding out the ten.
What coverage costs
The countrywide average auto insurance expenditure is one thousand sixty two dollars per insured vehicle in the latest N A I C series, and premiums have risen substantially since that reading.
The spread is the story
In our ten city study, identical driver profiles were quoted from roughly twenty four hundred to seventy eight hundred dollars a year, depending on the company and city. Picking the wrong carrier costs more than a coverage upgrade.
Size is not price
Market share tells you who can handle a claim anywhere. It does not tell you who prices your profile best. Strong regional insurers routinely beat national brands inside their footprints.
How to choose
Decide your coverage first. Get at least three quotes for identical limits. Check complaint records with your state insurance department. Weigh agent service against direct online. Then re-shop every renewal.
Cheapest never stays cheapest
Rates are re-filed constantly. The company that priced you best five years ago is rarely the one that prices you best today. Treat cheapness as a property of the quote, not the brand.
